Cassandra Raggatt, known fondly as Cass, stands as an example of hope and dedication in the Murraylands. A team leader with Genuine Support Services Australia, Cass’s life story is one of perseverance, compassion, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Her journey, rooted in her humble beginnings in the northern suburbs of Adelaide and stretching across the Murraylands, Fleurieu Peninsula, and the Adelaide Hills, stands as a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on their community.
Born at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, Cass was about four years old when her family moved to Mount Compass. Growing up, she displayed an innate affinity for understanding and connecting with people. “I’ve always been a people person,” she reflects. This natural inclination towards empathy and her philosophy of never judging another’s situation, became guiding principles in both her personal and professional life. “You never know what someone may be going through,” Cass often tells her children, instilling in them the same compassionate outlook she has carried throughout her life.
Cass’s professional journey began with juggling three cleaning jobs and a position at a bakery while attending university full-time. This demanding schedule did not deter her; rather, it fuelled her drive to make a difference. She soon transitioned into the community service industry, taking on roles in employment services, homelessness services, and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), before finding her niche as an activities coordinator and mental health care worker.
Her extensive background in these diverse areas provides Cass with a unique perspective on the varied needs of individuals within the community. “I really love being more involved on the ground,” she says. “Engaging with the participants and carers to ensure they are getting the most out of their support needs, is incredibly fulfilling.” Cass finds immense joy in celebrating the successes of those she supports, no matter how small the success may seem. “To me, they are all huge achievements,” she says. Her role also involves offering a steady hand during more challenging times, helping individuals move forward when life gets tough.
Cass’s dedication extends beyond her professional duties. Her move to Riverglades in Murray Bridge in 2013, was driven by a desire to be closer to her partner’s work and to access supported schooling for her son - another decision reflecting her unwavering commitment to her family and their well-being. Recently, Cass and her partner took a bold step by purchasing a farm at Tailem Bend, fulfilling a long-held dream. “Although this has been a big change for the whole family, it has been really good for us all,” Cass says. The farm has brought new challenges, but also a sense of fulfillment and joy, adding another layer of richness to their lives.
Cass enjoys getting home in time to see another wonderful sunset from her family’s loungeroom window and waking in the morning to travel to Murray Bridge under spacious blue skies.
In her role with Genuine Support Services Australia, Cass works closely with local NDIS providers, offering a range of disability support services. From in-home care and high-intensity care to personal care and respite, her team is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. The support they provide is not just about meeting basic needs but also about helping individuals achieve their personal goals and fostering social and community engagement.
Cass’s work impacts communities within the Murraylands, Fleurieu Peninsula, and Adelaide Hills regions, all benefiting immensely from the comprehensive, registered services offered by her team. Their efforts ensure that individuals receive the tailored support they need, whether it’s through mentoring, community activities, or personalised care plans. Cass and her team understand that true support goes beyond the physical; it encompasses emotional and social well-being, creating a holistic approach that addresses the diverse needs of everyone.
Life is good for Cass and her family, and her story serves as a reminder, that with heart and dedication, one person can indeed make a significant impact in their community. Through her work, Cass is not just providing support; she is building a legacy of kindness and care, that will resonate for years to come.
